Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme

OBJECTIVES:
To promote the development and application of new Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT) for poverty alleviation and sustainable human development
in the Asia-Pacific region.
PRIORITIES:
- Policy Development & Dialogue: provision of technical advisory
services, seminars,workshops, and information and referral services
to raise awareness, promote regional and national ICT policy dialogue,
and development of ICT strategies through a consultative process with
stakeholders such as through an e-Awareness seminar
Series for Asian Parliamentarians, e-Primers on the Information Economy,
and a regional public information effort related to e-ASEAN.
- Access:employing a dynamic mix of strategies - technical assistance
and advice, support to community access, sharing of best practices,
advocating industry standards and low-cost technologies, and supporting
local innovations and appropriate tools and technologies - including
through a pilot project on e-Learning for Life and support for internationally
acceptable local-language character-sets and innovative demonstrative
initiatives for rural or non-urban areas.
- Content Development and Knowledge Management: through support, advice,
and advocacy for the development of local content and related issues
such as internationally acceptable norms and standards for local language
character sets and fonts, facilitation of the development and creation
of knowledge and of knowledge
networks, resulting in greater e-services in trade, health, education,
and governance.
- An ICT for Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) focus through Communicating
for Change, an international multi-media package to help create a dialogue
and raise the profile of issues relating to ICT in relation to the MDGs
as well as through the preparation of a Regional Human Development Report
- a multi-country study aimed to assessing the ways in which ICTs
can be harnessed to best address the key issues involved.
