About the UNDP Men's Group
Following a gender mainstreaming workshop in February 1999 , a group of male
UNDP staff began informal discussions on the role of men as advocates for gender equality and the advancement of
women. As a first, awareness-raising activity, the Men's Group, in consultation with UNDP's Gender Advisory Committee,
organised a panel at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW, New York; March 1999). This panel presented information
about: practical experience in gender mainstreaming in UNDP Botswana's HIV/AIDS programme; NGO activities around
male socialisation processes and male sexuality; and, community media issues relating to the HIV/AIDS epidemic
in India.
The Group also formulated and broadcast a Statement on these issues to all UNDP
staff, attracting interest from other UNDP staff -- women and men -- as well as from similar groups in other countries.
The discussion on gender issues, ranging from hiring practices and sexual harassment to gender mainstreaming in
UNDP programmes, is being taken forward through meetings at UNDP headquartesr, and through an electronic discussion list.
