UPCOMING PLANS (February
26, 1999)
One of the pioneers of email and Internetworking in Pakistan, SDNP
is finally going to launch its online services from four of its five centres
in the country, i.e., Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar. The fifth
centre, Quetta, which is our latest node, and from where we started our
email and offline Internet services in August 1998, doesn't have the connectivity
infrastructure for setting up online services.
Coupled with these enhanced connectivity plans is our information services
for which a team is being recruited. The flagship of these info services
would be our web site which we envision to become the one-stop site for
all significant Sustainable Human Development info on Pakistan in the form
of a meta-repository. Apart from hosting web pages of organizations that
are prime information sources in Pakistan, links will be created to other
sites where relevant information can be found. Some of the larger organisations
may also be assisted to set up their own web servers (e.g. SDPI, Federation of Commerce). Capacity building of the target organizations in accessing the required information (through training in the effective use of Internet) and disseminating theirs (through training in web publishing) would be another important component of this programme.
Some other related activities -- like setting up a virtual library or
development of software for Development Information Systems (DIS) -- are
also being contemplated.
The web site would be launched simultaneously with our online services,
hopefully in the next couple of months. It'll however take a few more months
for this site to take some shape. Most of the information that we are looking
for is still not available in the electronic form and a huge amount of
effort is required to locate and convert it in this form.
